Bandhavgarh National Park, formerly a hunting ground for the Maharajas of Rewa, is a world-renowned tiger reserve with the highest density of Bengal tigers in the world.

The park was named after the Bandhavgarh fort, which is located nearby on 800 m high cliffs. The fort is now in ruins, but the hour-long trek there is worthwhile because it provides excellent views of the surrounding area. Jeep safaris are one of the most popular activities among visitors.

Bandhavgarh is home to more than 25 species of mammals, 250 species of birds, 80 types of butterflies, and a variety of reptiles. Other mammals found in Bandhavgarh include panthers, wolves, hyenas, wild dogs, gaur, cheetal, sambhar, barking deer, sloth bears, and many others. Bandhavgarh has always been an excellent tiger habitat, with the highest tiger density in the world.

Safari at Bandhavgarh

The months of October to May are ideal for visiting the national park. Jeep safaris operate in two shifts, one in the early morning around sunrise (around 5.30 AM) for four hours, and then again at 2-3 PM until sunset. Visitors who want to see tigers usually prefer the Tala region.

Flora and Fauna

Tigers, Asiatic jackals, foxes, sloth bears, ratels, grey mongoose, striped hyenas, jungle cats, and leopards are among the fauna found in the national park. It also has bird species such as the dove, parakeet, serpent eagle, black vulture, and common peafowl. The area is home to a variety of reptiles, including pythons, turtles, vipers, and rat-snakes. The flora is typically dry and deciduous, with sal and bamboo trees dominating the forest.

History and Etymology

Bandhavgarh National Park was formerly a hunting preserve of the Maharaja of Rewa and is now known for its heritage and white tigers. This location is legendary, and the park contains a plethora of historically significant landmarks. Since the time of Ramayana, the city of Bandhavgarh has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, which explains the copper tinted air and stone wind fragrances.

Bandhavgarh Fort

AThe Bandhavgarh Fort is located at the eastern end of the Bandhavgarh National Park. This is the highest point in the national park. Bandhavgarh Fort, one of India's oldest forts, was built more than 2000 years ago, though the history surrounding it is unclear. A one-hour trek from Tala zone is required, and visitors must be accompanied by a guide. This fort area contains numerous caves, some of which have inscribed paintings and scripts written in Brahmi.

Most animals, especially tigers, are creatures of habit. They have a regular patrolling pattern and they are partial to their favorite haunts. Guides and trackers visit the park every day and keep a track of these movements by checking the spoor of the tigers and listening to the alarm calls of animals. These alarm calls advertise the presence of a tiger. A good guide who is familiar with the animals of his area can substantially increase your chances of seeing a tiger.
