Satpura National Park is one of the most diverse and stunning national parks in Central India, located in the beautiful and diverse suburbs of Madhya Pradesh.

The sanctuary, one of India’s most beautiful tiger reserves, won the TOFT Wildlife Tourism Award for the most visitor-friendly wildlife destinations in 2010. Satpura Tiger Reserve, located in the Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh, India, covers an area of 202 square miles and takes its name from the Satpura Hill ranges, also known as the Mahadeo hills.

A National Park rich in biodiversity

The park has an elevation of 320-1,352m with tall sandstone mountains, narrow gorges, ravines, waterfalls, streams and dense forests near the Mahadev hills in the Pachmarhi plateau.

The area boasts of two unique species of treed–the sal and the teak besides wide varieties of ferns, mango trees, butterflies and birds.

Satpura National Park is also critical to India’s ecosystem because it, along with the Bori and Pachmarhi sanctuaries, provides approximately 550 square miles of tiger reserve area. It was built in 1981 and has an altitude range of 300 to 1,352 meters. Satpura National Park’s forest enclaves provide habitat for several endangered and threatened species, as well as a variety of plants and animals.

History of Satpura National Park

Captain James Forsyth of the Bengal Lancers first explored the area and land that is now the Satpura National Park in 1862. When the concerned authorities recognized the ecological and commercial value of the area's vast expanses of lush green forests, they decided to declare it a reserve forest. The state government then designated the area as a National Park and Sanctuary in order to focus more attention on conserving the ecosystem's faunal and floral wealth.

As it is home to endangered and rare species, the Satpura National Park is rich in biodiversity and an important part of the Indian ecosystem. It has a stunning floral variety, with over 1300 plant species. Sal, teak, tendu, bamboos, mahua (Indian butter-tree), bel (stone-apple), grasses, bushes, and other medicinal plants are included on this list.

Fauna at Satpura Tiger Reserve

Its fauna includes Indian Bison (Gaur), Spotted Dear, Leopards, Tigers, Wild boar, Sloth bear, Wild dogs (known locally as Dholes), Blackbuck, Four Horned antelopes, Porcupine, Sambhar, Otters, Crocodile, Langurs, Malabar squirrels, and others. Satpura National Park is known for its White Bison and Indian Giant squirrel. The sanctuary also serves as a stopover for a wide range of migratory birds from November to March.

The Satpura National Park safari begins with a motorboat ride across the Denwa River provided by the forest department. Following that, the tourists must wait for the jeeps, during which time they can observe blue bull babies and spotted deer in peace. There is also forest department lodging available here.
