History of Periyar National Park

The Mullaperiyar dam, built in the 12th century, resulted in the formation of the Periyar lake reserve. This artificial water body allowed numerous species of plants and animals to thrive naturally; as a result, the Maharaja of Travancore, Balarama Varma, declared the area a private game reserve to prevent tea plantations from encroaching on it. The sanctuary was designated as a wildlife reserve following India's political integration in 1950. The park was designated as a tiger reserve in 1978, and it was designated as a national park in 1982.

The floral beauty of the location is also enchanting. This park's top flora includes teak, mangoes, rosewood, tamarind, bamboos, sacred fig, sandalwood, jacarandas, Indian conifers, and others. Plantations of medicinal plants, as well as coffee, cardamom, and tea, can be found here.

White tigers, Indian elephants, wild pigs, flying squirrels, fruit bats, sloth bears, and jungle cats can all be found here. More than 266 bird species, including migratory ones, live here as well. The Malabar grey hornbill, white-bellied blue flycatcher, Sunbird, great hornbill, black-necked stork, and Nilgiri wood pigeon are among the best birds to see here. There are 45 species of reptiles, including lizards, snakes, and turtles, 40 species of fish, and over 160 butterfly species here.
