There is archaeological evidence that the forests of Wayanad have been inhabited for over 3000 years. Wayanad was ruled by several dynasties, including the Kutumbiyas, Kadambas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara empire. Pazhassi Raja of ancient Kottayam was Wayanad's most powerful ruler. Tipu Sultan took his kingdom from him. During Tipu Sultan's reign, the area flourished and grew. The British took over Wayanad in 1799 and encouraged prosperous crop production. As a result, over time, tea, coffee, and spices were grown on the fertile soils of Wayanad.
Wayanad's spice plantation is one of Kerala's most important spice plantations. Wayanad is one of Kerala's hill destinations where nature makes music with its soothing climate, romantic waterfalls, evergreen hill ranges, and diverse spice cultivation. The cultivation of perennial plantation crops and spices characterizes this high altitude district. Spices of various types are grown in Wayanad. The region's main cash crops are coffee, cocoa, pepper, ginger, and, more recently, plantain and vanilla. Wayanad is notable for its coffee-based farming system.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, which is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and the protected areas of Nagarhole and Bandipur, is one of Wayanad's wildlife habitats. Animals such as jungle and civet cats, panthers, monitor lizards, peacocks, babblers, cuckoos, woodpeckers, wild dogs, tigers, bears, deer, and vultures live there.

The trek to Chembra Peak, which contains a natural heart-shaped lake called 'hridhayathadakam,' is the most popular in Wayanad. Treks to Lakkidi viewpoint, also known as the Getaway to Wayanad, the ancient Edakkal Caves, and Neelimala viewpoint, famous for the Meenmutty falls, are also available.
