Agra is the most populous city in Uttar Pradesh and the twenty-fourth most populous city in India. Agra is one of the most important cities in Indian history. This beautiful city, located on the banks of the Yamuna River, gained public attention when Sikander Lodhi decided to make Agra the capital city. Even during the reigns of Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb, it remained the capital city. During the Mughal period, Agra gained some of its most magnificent monuments, including the Taj Mahal, the Buland Darwaza, and the Agra Fort.
The Taj Mahal, one of the world's seven wonders, is located in Agra on the banks of the Yamuna River. It was built as a memorial for Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan's third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It also contains the tomb of Shah Jahan. The Taj Mahal, built entirely of white marble in the 17th century, is one of the world's most beautiful monuments.
Emperor Akbar constructed the Red Fort of Agra, also known as the Agra Fort, in 1573. It is made entirely of red sandstone and is located on the right bank of the Yamuna River. Until 1638, the historical fort was the residence of the Mughals. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the epitome of Mughal art and architecture, constructed entirely of red sandstone.
Mehtab Bagh is a charbagh garden complex and one of Agra's final Mughal gardens. It is located just north of the Taj Mahal, with views of the Agra Fort and the Yamuna River on the other side. Mehtab Bagh, perfectly aligned with the gardens of the Taj Mahal, offers a picture-perfect view of the Taj from the fountain at the front of the entrance gate. It is a popular sunset location for photographers and nature lovers.
Agra is known for a wide range of unique and extinct crafts that are no longer practiced. A small marble replica of the Taj Mahal is one of the most popular collectibles. Agra's shopping district is teeming with markets, department stores, retail outlets, and local bazaars. Many people come to Agra to showcase their valuable talent, such as artisans, jewelers, embroiderers, carpet makers, and weavers.
Agra never ceases to fascinate, whether you enjoy spicy chaats or sweet treats. Petha, a soft candy made from ash gourd, is almost synonymous with Agra's cuisine and is an absolute must-try. The Chaat here is another delectable option. Agra has a wide variety of Chaat available throughout the city, including Aloo Tikki, Pani Puri, Papri Chaat, Samosa, and Kachori.
