Chandigarh: Modern India at the Himalayan Gateway

Chandigarh — A Modern City Looking Towards the Hills

Discover Le Corbusier’s modernist vision, remarkable public spaces and a compelling transition from India’s plains towards Himachal.

Chandigarh presents an unexpected chapter in an Indian journey. Created as a new capital following Independence and closely associated with architect Le Corbusier, its broad avenues, geometric sectors and landscaped public spaces stand in striking contrast to the historic cities of northern India.

Set close to the Shivalik foothills, Chandigarh also occupies an important geographic position on journeys towards Himachal Pradesh. The city is comfortable to explore during the cooler months from October to March, while spring can also be rewarding. Rather than simply passing through, spending time here reveals the optimism, experimentation and architectural ambition of a newly independent India before the journey turns towards the mountains.

Le Corbusier and the Making of Modern Chandigarh

Chandigarh’s urban identity grew from one of the twentieth century’s most ambitious experiments in city planning.

Le Corbusier developed the master plan and designed the monumental Capitol Complex, while architects including Pierre Jeanneret, Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew contributed significantly to the wider city.

Exploring Chandigarh therefore means looking beyond individual buildings to understand an entire urban philosophy. Roads, residential sectors, civic spaces and green corridors were conceived as interconnected parts of a functioning city. The UNESCO-listed Capitol Complex provides its most monumental expression, bringing architecture, political history and the aspirations of post-Independence India together in a setting unlike any other destination on a journey towards the Himalayas.
