Kaziranga National Park, home to the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinos, is one of India’s natural treasures in terms of flora and fauna.

It is located in the North-Eastern Indian state of Assam, and its total area is shared by the districts of Nagaon, Golaghat, and Karbi Anglong, placing it roughly in the state’s center. Kaziranga National Park, located approximately five hours by road from Guwahati, is the epitome of successful wildlife conservation in India. It was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.

Home to the one horned rhino

This national park is distinguished by tall elephant grass, marshlands, and tall tropical broadleaf forests, which receive massive amounts of rainfall each year, sometimes exceeding dangerous levels. A diverse range of wildlife thrives here, including the one-horned rhino, Asiatic elephants, wild water buffalo, leopards, and Royal Bengal Tigers. Kaziranga National Park is also officially designated as a Tiger Reserve, and it is home to one of the world’s largest tiger populations.

History of Kaziranga

Some historians believe that the name could also mean 'village of Kajir', derived from the Karbi word 'Kajir-a-rong'. On June 1, 1905, the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest was established, covering an area of 232 square kilometers. It was designated as a Reserve Forest in 1908 and renamed Kaziranga Game Reserve in 1916. The Assam government passed the Assam National Park Act in 1968, establishing Kaziranga as a national park. The Indian government granted it official status on February 11, 1974, and it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fauna at Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park is well-known for having the world's largest population of One-Horned Rhinoceros, Wild Water Buffalo, and Eastern Swamp Deer. There are 35 mammalian species in total, 15 of which are threatened. Elephants, gaur, sambar, Indian muntjac, wild boar, Indian grey mongoose, small Indian mongoose, large Indian civet, Bengal fox, golden jackal, sloth bear, and the 'big five' of Kaziranga are the one-horned rhinoceros, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, Asian elephant, and royal Bengal tiger.

Flora at Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park's flora is divided into three categories: alluvial inundated grasslands, tropical wet evergreen forests, and tropical semi-evergreen forests. The national park is famous for its dense and tall elephant grasses interspersed with small swamplands left behind by the river Brahmaputra's receding flood waters. In addition to grasses and forests, Kaziranga Park has an abundance of water lilies, water hyacinth, and lotus, which create a beautiful setting.
