Thanjavur, also known as Tanjore or the city of temples, has a rich cultural heritage and is well-known for its Tanjore paintings, antiques and handicrafts, textiles and saris, Carnatic music and musical instruments, and, of course, the temples. As it has a religious significance, this location is a must-see for all pilgrims.
Thanjavur is a significant religious, artistic, and architectural center in South India. The majority of the Great Living Chola Temples, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are in and around Thanjavur. The most important of these, the Brihadeeswarar Temple, is located in the city center.
In and around the district, there are numerous religious sites. The main tourist attractions are Siva Ganga Garden, Art Gallery, Palace & Saraswathi Mahal Library, and Sangeetha Mahal.
Thanjavur was the capital of the Great Chola king Rajaraja, who commissioned the beautiful Brihadishvara temple. This location's history dates back to the Sangam period. Previously known as 'Tanjapuri,' the city was ruled by Vijayalaya Chola, who had a brilliant vision for architecture as well as a strong army. Following the dissolution of the Chola dynasty in the 13th century, the Pandya empire came to power for a brief period before Britishers invaded in the 18th century.
The majority of the temples in the city are associated with Lord Shiva worship, and their history dates back to the days when the region was ruled by Chola Kingdom rulers. Each temple has a story associated with its origin that is still recited in the form of folklore by Thanjevur's native inhabitants. A few of these temples, including Brahadeeswara and Gangaikonda, have also been designated as World Heritage Sites, giving visitors even more reasons to visit this location.
A popular style of classic south Indian painting that developed during Chola rule and became a city-specific art form. These works center on the depiction of Hindu gods and goddesses using stones, wood, glass, and other materials. They are mostly painted on wood frames known as 'Palagai Padam' in the region.
The Brahadeshwara Temple, also known as the Big Temple, is Thanjavur's main attraction. This architectural marvel was built during the reign of the Great Chola emperor, Raja Raja Chola. This temple is a favorite among pilgrims, protected by deep trenches on either side and the Grand Anaicut River running through another. The shrine itself stands 216 feet tall. The sanctum is adorned with Chola and Nayak period paintings. At the entrance, a statue of Nandi the Bull greets visitors.
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual community or ashram in Pondicherry that grew out of a small group of disciples who gathered around Sri Aurobindo after he retired from politics and settled in Pondicherry in 1910. This ashram was founded with the intention of assisting people in attaining moksha and inner peace.
