Step Into the Sacred South of Varanasi
According to the Shiva Mahapurana, the southern part of Varanasi—known as Gauri Kedareshwar Khand—is the city’s most sacred region. This enlightening walking tour explores the spiritual richness of this area, winding through sacred ponds, hidden shrines, and centuries-old temples rooted in mysticism, poetry, and devotion.
Beginning at Assi Ghat, the southernmost embankment of the Ganges, this immersive walk traces the footsteps of 16th-century poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas, who authored the Ramcharitmanas, a beloved retelling of the Ramayana in the local tongue. You’ll visit the temple dedicated to him and learn how his life and writings shaped the spiritual landscape of Banaras.
As you explore quiet alleyways and temple courtyards, you’ll come upon Lonark Kund, the Monkey Temple, and other hidden gems—many dating back over two millennia. The walk concludes with a rare darshan of a hidden Sun Temple tucked behind Tulsidas’s home. Along the way, don’t be surprised to step aside for a funeral procession—an ever-present reminder of Varanasi’s deep embrace of both life and death.
