History of Periyar National Park<\/h3>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The Mullaperiyar dam, built in the 12th century, resulted in the formation of the Periyar lake reserve. This artificial water body allowed numerous species of plants and animals to thrive naturally; as a result, the Maharaja of Travancore, Balarama Varma, declared the area a private game reserve to prevent tea plantations from encroaching on it. The sanctuary was designated as a wildlife reserve following India's political integration in 1950. The park was designated as a tiger reserve in 1978, and it was designated as a national park in 1982.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>
