There is archaeological evidence that the forests of Wayanad have been inhabited for over 3000 years. Wayanad was ruled by several dynasties, including the Kutumbiyas, Kadambas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara empire. Pazhassi Raja of ancient Kottayam was Wayanad's most powerful ruler. Tipu Sultan took his kingdom from him. During Tipu Sultan's reign, the area flourished and grew. The British took over Wayanad in 1799 and encouraged prosperous crop production.
