From the Easter Sunday attacks to the global pandemic and the subsequent economic meltdown, the nation has faced crisis after crisis. Yet, even through these challenges, something powerful has remained: responsible tourism continues to uplift communities, restore ecosystems, and protect endangered wildlife.\r\n\r\nAt Experiential Journeys Australia, sustainability is not a marketing phrase \u2014 it is the foundation of how we operate across Sri Lanka and India. One of the clearest examples of this commitment is the Human\u2013Elephant Conflict (HEC) mitigation project in Gonaganara Village, bordering Yala National Park, developed by our long-term Sri Lankan partners, Eco Team, with funding support from All for Nature (Netherlands).\r\n\r\nThis project is a living example of how tourism-supported conservation can save both humans and elephants.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;15116&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\r\n<h2>Sri Lanka\u2019s Human\u2013Elephant Conflict: A Crisis at its Peak<\/h2>\r\nSri Lanka loses approximately 300 elephants and nearly 100 people each year due to HEC. Restoring an ancient tank (89 BC)<\/h3>\r\nOriginally built under King Walagamba, this tank once provided seasonal water for wildlife and agriculture but had deteriorated.\r\n\r\nIt has now been:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Deepened<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Strengthened<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Reconnected to its watershed<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nThis revitalised ecosystem provides elephants with water and grasslands outside the village boundaries.\r\n<h3>2. Re-establishing a jungle canal system<\/h3>\r\nA historic canal \u2014 clogged for decades \u2014 was cleared to bring rainwater into the tank.\r\n\r\nThis ensures a consistent water supply, enhancing feeding grounds for elephants and reducing their movement toward fields.\r\n<h3>3.
