    1st Night : Negombo

    Your Pedal Sri Lanka adventure begins in Negombo, a vibrant coastal town located just minutes from Bandaranaike International Airport. Long known for its fishing heritage and colonial influences, Negombo presents an inviting introduction to the island’s diverse character. Colourful catamarans line the shores, historic churches rise among bustling streets, and an intricate network of canals reveals centuries of maritime history.     Upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Negombo. Those arriving earlier may join an optional familiarisation ride with the cycling guides, offering an opportunity to become comfortable with the bicycles while exploring the relaxed coastal surroundings. Non-riding companions may simply unwind by the beach or enjoy the hotel’s facilities.     2nd Night : Chilaw

    Continuing north along Sri Lanka’s western coastline, the journey reaches Chilaw, a lively seaside town shaped by the rhythms of the Indian Ocean. Fishing remains central to local life, with colourful boats, busy harbours, and bustling fish markets adding energy to the waterfront. Beyond its maritime heritage, Chilaw is surrounded by lagoons, estuaries, and mangrove ecosystems that create an attractive blend of nature and traditional village life. It offers a gentle introduction to the riding experience while presenting an authentic glimpse into coastal communities rarely encountered by most travellers.

    After breakfast, transfer to Dankotuwa and begin your first ride from Thopputota Junction. Pedalling through Sri Lanka’s coconut-growing region, the route follows peaceful village roads lined with plantations, family homes, and local farms. Along the way, visit traditional clay roof tile workshops and observe craftsmen preserving generations-old skills. Continuing through Naththandiya and Marawila, experience the gentle pace of rural life before reaching the lagoons and mangroves near Thoduwawa. By this stage, participants complete more than 400 kilometres of riding and transition from the cycling expedition into a slower phase of discovery and relaxation. Fringed by golden beaches and swaying palms, Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka’s surfing capital and among the world’s finest surf destinations, particularly from May to October. It also serves as the meeting point where Stage 1 participants depart and Stage 2 guests join the continuing adventure.

    The final riding day begins with a memorable 50-kilometre journey from Pasikuda to Kokadicholai via Karadiyanaru. Leaving the eastern coastline behind, the route traverses peaceful landscapes where lagoons, paddy fields, and village settlements unfold beneath expansive skies.     11th Night : Udawalawe

Every accommodation, cycling route, experience, and charitable initiative has been carefully selected to ensure safety, comfort, and authenticity while showcasing the remarkable diversity of cycling in Sri Lanka.     The important stuff:

    Sri Lanka is a nation where religion and culture occupy an important place in the day-to-day lives of the local people. It is important to be aware of the customs and practices that are particular to the location you are visiting, so here are a few general tips to keep in mind during your travels. Your guide / chauffeur will assist you with more detailed information.

    • If you plan on visiting any temples, ancient or current, you should wear clothing that covers your body from your shoulders down to your knees. Head coverings such as caps or helmets should be removed and shoes must be taken off at the entrance. White coloured clothing is generally a good choice to go with here.
    • Some religious places do not allow photography or videography without prior permission and some may not allow it at all. Refer to signage or ask your chauffeur guide about the policy or protocol. Don’t try to photograph or take videos without permission.
    • If you have any tattoos associated with Buddhism, Hinduism or Islamism, it’s best that you cover them completely in public places.
    • Smoking is prohibited in indoor public places, workplaces and on public transport.
